Park Row Apartments Open Amidst Controversy

The developer of the new Park Row Apartments, Robert McMaster, says, "When you come into an area like this and you're taking the last significant piece of property there's obviously going to be concern from everybody that what is built here is something that's going to fit in with the community."

It's been well over a decade since this downtown lot was occupied. But the new occupant is receiving mixed reviews in the community.

"Well, obviously this is a tremendous addition to downtown Bowling Green. What it means is that we'll have more residents that live in city center Bowling Green which is a good thing for the business community."

On the flip side, downtown merchants believe it will not help their businesses much, if any. None of the merchants WBKO spoke to wanted to go on camera, but they all say the apartments tenants' are not their target demographic.

Another concern with downtown businesses we spoke to is that the Concerts in the Park, that are performed on the square every summer could be in jeopardy if a sound ordinance is passed. These concerts keep downtown businesses thriving.

Merchants we spoke to also say the downtown square is home to restaurants and bars and that a residential senior complex does not fit in with the trend. But the developer of Park Row says they are proving themselves to be a good fit with downtown.

McMaster says, "Based on our turnouts and some comments today at our ribbon-cutting, I think we've succeeded in doing that. We're very proud to be here."
