Judge Margaret Huddleston has seen firsthand the effects divorce has on children.

Huddleston says, "They just have that feeling of separation. Separation anxiety, the loneliness and sometimes homelessness and of course, the pain and anger they feel."

That's the reason she asked photographer Jeanie Adams-Smith to display her exhibit, "Survivors: Children of Divorce," in her family courtroom.

Huddleston says, "She was able to go into the families’ homes and capture the most private and sometimes most highly emotional moments of the children, particularly."

On December 13, Judge Huddleston held an open house in her courtroom to show off the exhibit. She said grown men and women were moved to tears by the photographs.

Huddleston says, "The black and white photographs that we have make such a significant and really sobering statement in this courtroom. I have now used it after a hearing. I've asked the parties to get up and look at the photographs before they walk back out and start the same dispute again."

One of the most poignant photographs shows a young girl in the foreground on her first day of kindergarten. In the background, you see her parents arguing as she waits for the bus. Hudleston hopes seeing these photos may discourage parents from putting themselves first.

Huddleston says, "I'm hoping that it will have a significant impact on those that are in this courtroom."
