Former House Speaker Resigns After 21-Year Career

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's 21-year career in Congress is officially over.

The Illinois congressman made his resignation official last night with a letter to the Illinois governor.

Hastert says he chose to resign Monday in order to give the governor time to set a special primary election.

That election will take place Feb. 5.

The special primary will allow voters to choose candidates to run for the remainder of Hastert's term.

It ends in Jan. 2009.
