The remains of tropical storm Isidore dropped up to eight inches in our area, turning puddles into ponds and streets into streams. However, last Tuesday's torrential downpours almost turned deadly for one area teen-ager.
Rain or shine, Greenwood High School's Cross Country Team practices at Kereiakes Park weekly. Last week's practice was one of endurance and determination for friends of Susan Beth Meeks. The 8th grader tripped into a large culvert. The rushing water at the time overtook Susan Beth sweeping her inside.
With her foot lodged Susan Beth was unable to free herself, and at times found herself completely submerged under the rushing water.
Teammate Matt Knight dove underwater, freeing her leg and eventually pulling her to safety. Meek's father credits Matt with ultimately saving his child's life.
