Funding Secured for Health Department

An area health department will remain open and remain fully-staffed after a controversial funding issue is resolved.

Tuesday morning, Todd County Fiscal Court voted to transfer money from the General Fund, in order to fix an estimated $100,000 shortfall.

The shortfall stems for the fiscal court's decision to approve a property tax rate of 1.5 cents, down from 1.8 cents last year. The previous ruling would have resulted in roughly $11,000 of county dollars, which qualifies the facility for more than $90,000 in state funds.

The director of the health department says if the issue wasn't resolved, she would have had to lay-off 4 of her 11 employees as well as cut other services.

Judge Executive Cecil Mallory says other county services shouldn't be affected by Tuesday's decision to dip into the general fund.
