Nation's First Mining Death of 2008 Occurs in Kentucky

The nation's first mining death of 2008 has occurred here in Kentucky.

29-year-old Roy Sturgill was killed around 1:00 a.m. on Jan. 8, when his vehicle backed over a tipping point at a Letcher County mine and went down a slope.

The mine is operated by the Cumberland River Coal Company.

Kentucky Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Susan Bush says the mine was cited with 24 safety violations in 2007.

Inspectors also issued 19 orders banning the use of specific pieces of equipment.
