Census Numbers

For the next few weeks Newscenter Thirteen will be taking a look at the Hispanic and Eastern European population and their immigration to South Central Kentucky. In the 12 years since the last census was taken the Hispanic population has increased by more than 300 percent in the Barren River area.

Census officials say though that the actual population may be two to three times higher than published. Bowling Green resident Alan Palmer, a worker for the United States Census, says its difficult to accurately determine how many immigrants live in the area. Many illegal residents are not counted. Palmer says those families that have moved to the area are looking for a better life.
