Firefighters Response

At a Bowling Green Fire Department, fighting fires is their job.

“It can be anything from a lint trap in a dryer on fire to a house or businesses completely engulfed.”

But firefighters answer the call, to more than just fires.

They respond to car accidents, entrapments and medical emergencies.

In fact, only 7% of the calls firefighters respond to are actual fires.

A recent report from the National Fire Protection Association shows fire departments responded to around 22.4 million calls in 2003. Among them 13.6 million were for medical assistance, 2.2 million triggered by false alarms, and about 1.6 million calls or 7% for fires.

“You’re able to help people which is important to me.”

Captain Scott Givens says while these numbers are shocking, answering all calls is his job.
