Starting June 1st, Kentucky’s 3-cent per pack cigarette tax goes up by 27 cents.

This 27-cent increase represents the state’s first cigarette tax increase since 1971, when it was increased by just half a cent.

Most smokers we talked to say the additional cost to light up won’t change their decision to stop smoking.

“For people devoted to smoking it’s not going to make a difference, its really not.”

Kristy Thompson began smoking over 3 years ago and says one day she plans to kick the habit.

“When schools over and my stress level goes down.”

The cigarette tax increases from 3-cents per pack to 30-cents, with a penny of that going to cancer research at the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.

Local lawmakers say the tax increase will bring over $125 million into Kentucky.
