Area Soldiers Thwart Insurgents in Iraq

About 20 miles south of Baghdad, dozens of insurgents opened fire on the convoy the Kentucky National Guard troops were escorting. Specialist Casey Cooper is the gunner of the Humvee that was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. He actually saw it coming!

Sergeant Leigh Anne Hester, 23, from Bowling Green, says your adrenaline overrides your fear, and it's kill or be killed. Specialist Ashley Pullen laid down suppressive fire from the rear of her Humvee at enemy marksmen in a nearby orchard.

Sergeant Joe Rivera of Bowling Green, and two Paducah National Guardsmen, Bill Haynes and Bryan Mack, were injured in Sunday's attack. They are currently recovering in the U.S. Army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.
