Children First: Teaching Spanish at Early Age

By  |

The Bowling Green Independent School District is the most diverse school district in Kentucky. As we continue our Hometown Focus on immigration we look at the efforts of teachers and students to communicate despite language barriers.

Three out of four students in Parker Bennet Elementary Kindergarten class will speak a language other than English when they get home from school. But programs are in place to make sure everyone is speaking Spanish.

Carlos Rodriguez is an English and music teacher from Spain. He is in Bowling Green for a year teaching kindergarteners and pre-schoolers Spanish. Students are learning Spanish phonetics and comprehending directions.

Educators say when it comes to learning another language the earlier the better. They also say that in today's job market a second language is a definite plus.
