Authorities say 17-year-old Shannon Houchins' car slammed into a Monarch Environmental garbage truck on Thanksgiving Day in 2000. She was in a coma for 57 days.
No criminal charges were ever filed, but Wednesday, Nov. 20, the civil trial began, in which Shannon's family is suing Republic Services, the owner of the garbage truck, for damages. Jury selection and opening statements are being made in Warren Circuit Judge Tom Lewis' court.
