Do You Buckle Up?

It may be the law, but results of a recent study show Kentucky's seat belt usage is the fifth lowest in the country, 15% below the national average of 79%.

State and local police officers say they want to turn those numbers around before it's too late.

"What we see the majority of time, is in a roll over crash, where a driver or passenger is not wearing a seat belt, is that they are crushed or end up being ejected by the vehicle."

Bowling Green Police Officer Barry Pruitt says so far this year, the department has issued 157 citations to motorists not wearing seat belts, and to 16 parents who failed to buckle up their children.

But unfortunately, police say these grim statistics don't seem to be getting through.

"Some people are under the misconception that it is safer without one, or they say it is uncomfortable, but it is dangerous, plus it's the law."
