A new piece of legislation in the house could make it harder to have your identity stolen.

WBKO has more on the bill, and how local experts are reacting.

Attorney General Jack Conway and Representative Robin Webb say House Bill 533 will help protect Kentuckians from identity theft.

So WBKO sat down with a BB&T banking professional to get his take on the proposed legislation.

"It would appear to be very important. For the past seven years consumer identity theft problems have been ranked the top consumer issue to the consumer trade commission," said Rick Wilson

The bill will update existing laws pertaining to identity theft, and will included provisions for changing technologies.

One Kentucky professional says he couldn't be happier.

"I've known of instances when people were actually arrested for crimes that they didn't do. And it was ID theft. So I think it's really an excellent piece of legislation," said Brenda McClahahan.

Bowling Green experts agree, and say the bill would have a positive impact on the area.

"The bill allows for a greater emphasis on businesses to make sure that any important information they had, not be leaked outside," Wilson explains.

The bill 533 was introduced to the Kentucky House of Representatives today, and will have to pass before moving on to the senate.
