Cumberland County Schools Superintendent, John Hurt, says: "I'm sure in their minds it was a prank. But as you and I know, it was a very serious situation, and potentially a very dangerous situation."

On April 18, vocational students from Cumberland County High School built a "Macgyver" bomb on a school bus.

Hurt says: "I had never heard of it until we were involved in this incident. And I still couldn't tell you."

The explosion happened on a bus. Superintendent Hurt says there's almost no way security could have caught the students because the bomb was made with common household items.

Hurt says: "We take every instance that threatens any of our children or our staff very seriously."

But some in the community say it would help if there was tighter security on school buses.

Jason Armstrong says: "It probably wouldn't hurt anything because a lot of stuff happens in small towns because people aren't paying attention because they don't think it will happen."

Misty Dubre says: "I think there needs to be someone on the trade school bus that travels with them to chaperone. I think there needs to be another adult, besides the bus driver because he's driving the bus and that's all he can do."

Superintendent Hurt says they do as much as they can to educate the students that incidents like this are not seen as pranks.

Hurt says: "We have a lot of programs throughout the course of the school year that we try to make students and parents aware of the seriousness of things like this."

The bomb caused damage to metal components on the rear of the bus and some of the bus seats. Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident. Now most of them are facing second degree wanton endangerment charges. And the Cumberland County Board of Education took action against students involved.
