Cigarette Tax Increases Today

If you bought a pack of cigarettes today, you probably noticed you had to pay more than normal. Today is the day the 30-cent cigarette tax took effect.

Some of the money from the hike will go to help cancer research.

The state will split one cent from the 27-cent increase between the cancer research centers at the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky.

According to the Courier Journal, the tax is expected to raise $2.5 to $3 million each year for cancer research and $5 to $6 million total after the universities raise funds.
