News Director Report

Hello everyone,

I want to first apologize for missing a week with these reports; it’s been quite hectic around here. Summertime means community time around the newsroom. Last week, Lauren Hanson and James Brandenburg hosted a live show promoting the Glasgow Highland Games. This event brings a lot of people to South-Central Kentucky and we’ve supported it with a special show for several years.

The Crusade for Children was also this past weekend. Chris Allen hosted a show from Columbia on Saturday and Rough River on Sunday. If you are not familiar with Crusade, it is a program that unites fire departments around the state to collect money for children. The money is then routed back into the same communities that contributed. For example, if you live in Brownsville and donated money that money would be given to a children’s related program in Edmonson County or one elsewhere that benefited children from Edmonson County. This is the third year we’ve been involved with the program and will probably expand our involvement in the years to come to try to raise as much money as we can for the children of South-Central Kentucky.

Enough about what has already happened, let’s move on to what is ahead. First of all, I’d like to announce that Jamie Meriwether is our new Weekend Weather Anchor. Jamie is a recent graduate of Western and has been filling in for the past few weeks on the weekends. She’s done everything I’ve asked her to do on a fill-in basis and I expect great things from her in the weeks and months to come.

I’ve also had a few people ask me about Jon Hardison. He’s been off the air for the past several nights. Fear not, he’s just on vacation with his family. He should be back at the anchor desk on Monday the 13th.

I want to also let you all know about an idea we’ve had to let you guys pick some of the stories we’ll do next month. Next week, I’m going to be posting on the web site a list of stories we’re considering doing. I’ll be asking you to vote on which stories you would like to see on the news. They’ll also be an opportunity for you to provide some input on aspects of the stories you find most interesting.

We’re doing this for a variety of reasons. First of all, I’d like to find ways to get more people involved in developing stories. You guys are in touch with parts of the communities that my staff may or may not have access to. The more different perspectives and backgrounds that I can involve in the process, the better our product is going to be. Second, I’d like to get a better idea just how good a particular story idea really is. When you do this day-in and day-out, it’s easy to start seeing stories from a “television” perspective rather than a “viewer” perspective. This will give me a true viewer perspective. If I get a lot of response from this, I may make it a regular routine.

There are two more things I want to mention before I wrap this up: St. Jude and Willie.
We’re going to be doing a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital later this summer and it’s going to be a chance for you to win a new home. It’s pretty simple; you’ll be able to buy raffle tickets for the $250,000 home at a cost of $100 per ticket. There’s only going to be 6000 tickets sold, so your chances are not bad. We’ll be putting out more info on that later this month.

Finally, if you haven’t heard yet, Willie Nelson is coming to Bowling Green. He’ll be performing at Diddle Arena on August 12. I don’t know the details yet, but I do know we will be giving away tickets as the concert gets closer. Be sure to keep your eyes open for that. On that note I think I’ll be “On the Road Again”. (Sorry!)

As always, if you have any questions about our product or anything about the business you can email me at john.preston@wbko.com. I’ll try to include your questions in next week’s letter. Just a reminder, you can go to the “News Director Report” icon on the “news” page to see previous letters.

Until next time,

John Preston
