After a six hour meeting Thursday night, the City-County Board of Adjustments denied a landfill permit for North Warren County.

Contractors Waste applied for a permit to build a landfill on the corner of Harry Cherry and Willis Roads in Richardsville. General Manager Lawrence White told the board all county and state environmental standards had been met, but the board still rejected the proposed landfill.

Byron Keith Rone was one of 75 Richardsville residents who showed up to oppose the landfill.

"It tickled me to death."

Rone has lived in the area his whole life and says it’s not suitable for a landfill. He says there have been too many accidents on the roads to count not to mention these roads are so narrow they can’t accommodate big vehicles driving through.

Richardsville residents won the landfill fight once before in 1998 when a different company tried to put a landfill on the same site.

As for Contractors Waste, General Manger Lawrence White says he was shocked at the outcome. White says they completed several environmental studies and thought Richardsville was a great site for a landfill. He says he’ll continue to look for another place that’s cost effective for his customers.
