U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell is honored by his colleagues for surpassing Sen. John Sherman Cooper, as the longest serving republican senator in the history of Kentucky.

On June 27, McConnell officially broke Cooper's service record.

The Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, and Sen. Jim Bunning, paid tribute to McConnell's long career of public service.

He was elected to the senate 20 years ago in 1985.
