Green River Correctional Inmate, Jerry Matthews has been behind prison walls for ten years.

"Never recommend this past it’s being selfish its not you doing time, its your family doing the time."

Matthews says while he’s learned from his past mistakes, he’s also learning a lot through the game of softball.

"I love it, cause I get the fellowship with individuals I never met.”

The inmates took on members from Hillvue Heights Baptist Church out of Bowling Green on Saturday, where members say they’re trying to hit home with a different message.

“We want to be with them, try to show them the way to Jesus Christ….try to minister with them and make friends with them."

Prison officials say playing this game is good rehabilitation for the inmates. They say it helps them to relieve stress and lets them see what’s happening in the community that doesn’t happen inside the prison walls.

So far this year, the inmates have taken on teams from Louisville and Knoxville but are always looking for other teams to play softball and basketball against.

The facility is hoping to start up a volleyball team so if you have a team that’s interested in playing against the inmates you can contact the Green River Correctional Complex.
