A dozen barges have run aground near a water intake facility on the Ohio River in western Kentucky.

It is unknown if the barges damaged the water intake for the city of Sturgis.

Coast Guard officials say the barges must be removed before they'll know if any damage was done.

The Coast Guard said the barges being pushed by the Tow Vessel Andrew Cannava ran aground around 11 a.m. CDT March 13 near mile marker 871 in Union County on the river.

The Coast Guard said the vessel's owner is making efforts to mitigate the effects. County and city officials said that the city water intakes are functioning normally.

The grounding is under investigation.

The Coast Guard said no pollution has been reported and river traffic remains unaffected.
