I am a sandwich generation/boomer/daughter who gave up many of the aspects of my own life to care for my mothers. Yes, I underestimated the toll, the work, the heartache...but I also underestimated what I would glean from this profound experience. I was able to see the love my family had, the strength, the integrity. I certainly felt "tested" at times, and I didn't do it all "right," but I'm still glad I cared for my mother. Families do have a certainly amount of responsibility--at least to oversee care. We must participate, be there as much as we can, sacrifice at times for our loved ones. It's part of what makes us human.
