Over the years, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has given families and their children with cancer...hope.

WBKO's Sam Provenzano takes us to one area community that celebrated a child's special homecoming from the hospital early on April 5.

Robert Cunningham is celebrating his 13th birthday, but also on this special day there's something else to celebrate.

"I beat cancer, I'm home and that's all there is to it now," said Robert Cunningham, 13-year-old cancer survivor.

On Sept 11, 2007 Robert was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

"When he said he's got Leukemia..it takes your breath, I dunno it takes your heart.

"We were all just in a state of shock," said Betty Brown, Robert's grandmother.

Robert and his family were bruised, but not broken.

They turned to St. Jude, a move that changed all their lives.

"As we got off the ramp I turned around and saw this massive hospital, I knew we'd be okay," said Kim.

She was right.

Now Robert's cancer is in remission and the community is celebrating!

"It feels great," said Connor McCoy, Robert's friend.

"Welcome Home Robert!" said the Roberteers, a Relay for Life team dedicted to Robert.

It's unbelievable that he's home," said Nekayah West, who is a friend and classmate to Robert.

"Blessed, that is the big word...great big "B" said Betty.

"We're just very happy to have the family back home here in Butler County," stated Robert Cunningham, father.

As the community celebrates, the Cunningham's will never forget their time at St. Jude.

"It was the best hospital in the world .I don't think I could have lived if I went to another hospital."

And Robert will never forget his friends either, one in particular.

"One of my best friends had a brain tumor, about a month before we left he earned his wings," stated Robert.

Words cant describe what the Cunninghams have been through, especially for Robert.

"God is great!" he exclaims.

Robert, You are certainly right..."God is Great" lots of people don't realize that and I am so proud that you do!! He does answer prayer..if we pray that His will be done in our lives. You are a special young man that can do great things in God's name because you realize this at a young age.

I have known young Robert since he was around 5 or younger. As I have found out about him having this illness, I was sad and myself, and a few churches I attend in Morgantown and Bowling Green, have been praying to see that he will overcome it. What a blessing to see him home.
