Leitchfield Soldier Dies in Iraq

A Kentucky National Guard soldier from Leitchfield has died in Iraq.

Twenty eight-year-old William Alvin Allers, III was with the 617th military police company that had a detachment in Bowling Green. Allers was killed, and two other soldiers were wounded when their armored HUMVEE encountered an explosive device.

Allers joined the National Guard two years ago after serving with the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife Bethany and two children.

Allers is the eighth Kentucky Army National Guard soldier to lose his life in Iraq. He is the second from the 617th military police company. The first was Sgt. Michael Hayes of Morgantown.

The names of the injured soldiers have not been released. They were transported to Landstuhl Germany for treatment.
