Volunteers Keep Distribution Center Running

Volunteers from the Community Greeters Newcomers Club are doing their best to sort through the donations at the Hurricane Katrina.

"We're trying to balance the palates and make sure the items it says are actually in the box. Label them, stack them and load them in the trucks to get ready to head down south."

Mary Lou Kirby is just one of the hundreds of people from South Central Kentucky to pitch in. Whenever someone makes a dropoff the volunteers have a system to ensure it gets to the right place.

"Basically we do inventory first with dropoff items. Sort them and take a count. Makeup an inventory sheet. Then it's delivered to the various sites they need."

They are also preparing for a new system to make sure the survivors get the personal items they need.

"On Thursday what we're doing is putting together the care kits. They will be individual. And they'll be wash cloth, a towel, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush so that each individual pack will be made and they'll set up an assembly line for the volunteers packing those."

Kirby says she thinks what she's doing for the survivors is human nature.

"I can't conceive of what they are going through. And we were just talking and sorting out things. Can you imagine walking around in the same set of clothes all these days and not being able to take a shower? We just take it for granted so to get this down there as fast as we can is basically what we're her for!"

Four hour shifts are being scheduled at the Hurricane Katrina Regional Collection and Distribution Center. That's located at Brannen's Tobacco Warehouse Number Three on Louisville Road. The center is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. -7 p.m. Sundays noon to 7 p.m.

If you or your organization is interested in joining the effort, call (270)843-3205 or fill out a volunteer form when you drop off your donations.

Organizations collecting relief items need to call the United Way to arrange delivery of items to the regional collection center.
