A state representative in western Kentucky says he is switching his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.
State Representative James Carr of Hopkinsville says he is leaving the Democratic Party because leadership has fallen out of line with his conservative values.
He says the change takes effect immediately.
With Carr's defection, Democrats now hold a 56-44 advantage in the House.
Carr was first elected to the state House last fall.
