Detroit's scandal-plagued Mayor's days in office could be numbered.

Detroit City Council members took their first step on May 13 toward removing Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office.

They voted five-to-four to begin the process.

They also agreed to ask Michigan's Governor to remove him.

Kilpatrick is facing charges after explicit text messages between him and a former chief of staff contradicted his sworn testimony about their romantic relationship.

The City Council also voted to publicly censure Kilpatrick.

The Mayor says the Council's actions are politically motivated.
