After a few months of retirement, Chuck Coates is back in civil service.

Coates says: "City management has been my profession I like the public service aspect. And if I can help Franklin, I'm glad to try."

In perhaps the shortest city commission meeting in Franklin's history, an interim city manager was nominated then voted in to office. All in the course of 20 minutes.

Coates says: "I was contacted by Scott Crabtree, the city attorney here, a couple of weeks ago. He wanted to know whether or not I'd be interested in becoming interim city manager."

Just three days after the current city manager announced his resignation the city of Franklin has found an interim replacement.

Brown says: "Obviously Chuck's leaving Bowling Green left him available and we approached him to see if that would be a possibility."
Coates left his position as city manager of Bowling Green in April after 28 years on the job. He is expected only be interim city manager of Franklin for five to six months.

Brown says: "That's been pre-determined by him, that he's not interested in the position."

Coates says: "It could be extended if necessary, but I think the main goal is for me to provide a smooth transition until a new city manager can be appointed by the mayor and city commission."

Coates says there's a learning curve he has to get over by going out to meet the people and learn the community and he says he's looking forward to it.

Coates says: "I'm not going to work as a city manager forever. But I think I've gone through a period of months where I've decompressed from Bowling Green and I was looking for something new."

The search for a bowling green city manager is still ongoing. Ken Thompson has served as Bowling Green's interim city manager since April. At the beginning of this month a committee of 14 volunteers narrowed the search, choosing the four most qualified candidates for the job.
