CHOOSING CHILD CARE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS FAMILIES MAKE.
MAKING THE WRONG DECISION.... COULD PUT YOUR CHILD IN HARM'S WAY.
WE ALL WANT OUR CHILDREN TO BE LOVED AND CARED FOR WHEN WE ARE NOT WITH THEM…BUT THE TRUTH IS…THAT'S NOT ALWAYS THE CASE.
IN SEPTEMBER, REGINA JONES OF GLASGOW WAS SHOCKED WHEN SHE RECEIVED A CALL SAYING ONE OF HER TWIN INFANTS WAS INJURED AT NOAH'S ARK DAYCARE.
POLICE SAID THE EIGHT WEEK OLD BABY WAS BITTEN AND SCRATCHED BY AN 18-MONTH OLD WHILE THE CAREGIVER'S BACK WAS TURNED.
THE STATE SUSPENDED THE CENTER'S OPERATING LICENSE IMMEDIATELY.
A BOWLING GREEN WOMAN SAYS HER CHILD SUFFERED A SIMILAR FATE AT A DIFFERENT CHILD CARE CENTER.
TAMMY MARTIN SAYS WHEN IT BECAME NECESSARY TO CHOOSE A DAYCARE FOR HER TWO YEAR OLD SON KEEGAN AND EIGHT MONTH OLD DAUGHTER KENDALL…SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK.
AND SHE SAYS HER SON SUFFERED THE CONSEQUENCES.
SEVERAL WEEKS AGO…TAMMY GOT A CALL FROM HER DAYCARE SAYING KEAGAN HAD AN EARACHE.
"when I got there I noticed his ear was swollen..he had a bump on his head in a couple of places..he had scratches on his neck.
HER HUSBAND IMMEDIATELY TOOK KEEGAN TO A DOCTOR WHO DOCUMENTED FOUR BITE MARKS FROM A CHILD'S MOUTH ON HIS LEG…TWO ABRASIONS ON HIS NECK AND A BITE ON HIS EAR.
THE DOCTOR CALLED IT NEGLECT AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT..BUT THE DAYCARE CLAIMED NOT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.
"all we wanted was answers..I wanted to find out what happened..if anyone had seen anything…obviously someone had to see something." STATE RECORDS PULLED ON SOME AREA DAYCARES SHOW STAFF/CHILD RATIOS ARE ONE OF THE MOST COMMON COMPLAINTS FILED AGAINST CHILD CARE FACILITIES.
OTHERS VIOLATIONS WE FOUND INCLUDE:
INADEQUATE PROTECTION FROM THE SUN
LACK OF SUPERVISION ON THE PLAYGROUND
AND NO SEATBELTS USED DURING TRAVEL.
ANY OF THESE PRACTICES CAN BRING HARM TO A CHILD IN CARE…AND DOCUMENTATION IS KEY FOR BOTH THE PARENT AND THE CHILD CARE PROVIDER.
CHRISTA CREEKMORE IS A SOCIAL WORKER FOR THE MEDICAL CENTER.
SHE SERVES AS A LIASON BETWEEN THE HOSPITAL AND STATE OFFICIALS WHEN SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE OCCURS.
"yes I would say as far as your daycare, if the parents notice anything just like we do…any kind of unusual bruising or anything they would need to seek medical attention right away…documentation is what protection and permanency bases its investigation on.
KEEGEN IS NO LONGER IN DAYCARE AND HIS WOUNDS HAVE HEALED.
BUT HIS PARENTS SAY THEY'LL BE MUCH MORE PREPARED THE NEXT TIME AROUND.
"We're gonna try daycare again probably within the year…I didn't want to put him in daycare right away because this was a traumatic experience..he talks about it.
