CHILHOWIE, Va. (AP) -- A railroad spokesman says a man and a girl were killed when they were hit by a train while fishing from a bridge in southwestern Virginia. A boy who was with them survived.
Norfolk Southern spokesman Robin Chapman said the train was traveling near Chilhowie around 2 p.m. Sunday. He says the crew put on its emergency brakes when they saw the group, but still hit the man and girl.
Chapman says the boy dropped between the rails, which were about 25 to 30 feet high. He was initially reported missing, but showed up at a relative's house several hours later. He was taken to a hospital, but didn't have any signs of injuries.
The bridge was about 200 feet long. The Smyth County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
