It’s a crime that many people know could happen to them but really don't know what it is.
According to Kris Evans of Pre-Paid Legal Services, "It’s not really about credit cards. There's a misconception that someone steals your credit card and spends $10,000 that’s identity theft but it’s not. That’s credit card fraud."
"ID theft is when somebody uses your name or identity to get a job or driver's license in your name."
Evans notes the criminals who commit identity theft are becoming more advanced and harder to catch.
If you think you may be the victim of identity theft, experts suggest you file a complaint with the police and contact the Federal Trade Commission.
