Pay Plan Problems

"We felt it was important for us to take a stand at this point in time and say lets stop it from now on until we can have a chance to look at the whole situation," says Mayor Elaine Walker.

The City Commission ended the year discussing a pay plan that has been the topic of discussion most of the year.

Last night, Bowling Green Fire Department Captain Chris Alderson addressed the committee with his concerns about co-workers with less experience on the force receiving higher pay than him when they are promoted to the same position.

According to Mayor Elaine Walker, he's not the only one.

"We had a situation in police where there were promotions and as a result of those promotions different people in the same grade were making less and so we were bumping a number of salaries up...A number of salaries up."

Captain Alderson says most of those getting promoted since the new pay plan has started are receiving 15 percent increases in pay when promoted.

That means a raise of $1,000 to $2,000 more than someone promoted before the current pay plan receives.

Fire officials have worked with the commission to figure out a way fix the plan so that everyone is treated fairly.

Fire chief Gerry Brown says, "It is different for people having different periods of time and grade in a particular rank within the department and other ranks to come up with a pay plan that addresses 100 percent of personnel’s' concerns adequately."

The commission decided the issue was so complex, it would need to be re-evaluated when the new session begins at the first of the year.

"There are a lot of issues that have been raised. There are lot of possibilities on how to address that. None of them is foolproof. None of them is the way to address it," noted Mayor Walker.
