NWS Confirms Six Tornadoes...Two In Adair

THE STORM SURVEY TEAM FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE INLOUISVILLE HAS CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF THE STORM DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED IN ADAIR COUNTY THE AFTERNOON OF JANUARY 2 2006. WIND SPEED: APPROX 130 MPH (F2 FUJITA SCALE) PATH WIDTH: APPROX 200 YARDS MAXIMUM DEATHS: 0 INJURIES: 0 **ADDITIONAL DETAILS** DAMAGING THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED OVER ADAIR COUNTY MONDAY AFTERNOON.A TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN JUST SOUTH OF COLUMBIA AT APPROXIMATELY 222PM CST...DESTROYING A MOBILE HOME. THE TORNADO THEN CONTINUED NORTHEAST FOR ABOUT ONE MILE...DAMAGING SEVERAL HOMES...RIPPING A ROOF COMPLETELY OFF ONE HOME IN THE EAST PART OF COLUMBIA JUST TO THE EAST OF GREEN HILLS ROAD. A POLICEMAN OFF DUTY AT THE TIME DESCRIBED THE TORNADO AS IT APPROACHED HIS LOCATION. THIS TORNADO WAS RATED ON THE LOWER END OF THE F2 SCALE...WITH MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS APPROXIMATELY 130 MPH. THE SAME SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM PRODUCED ANOTHER TORNADO THAT TOUCHED DOWN NEAR PELLYTON IN FAR NORTHEAST ADAIR COUNTY...SEVERELY DAMAGING SEVERAL BARNS AND HOMES. THIS TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN AT ABOUT 257 PM CST AND WAS ON THE GROUND ABOUT ONE HALF MILE. EYE WITNESSES ALSO DESCRIBED THIS TORNADO AS IT APPROACHED. THIS TORNADO WAS RATED TO BE IN THE MIDDLE TO UPPER END OF THE F1 SCALE...WITH A MAXIMUM WIND SPEED ASSESSED AT ROUGHLY 110 MPH.
