Bowling Green Police Assessment

The Regional Community Policing Institute is reviewing the police department to see how well the station is serving the community.

"So what we're doing is just coming in, seeing where they currently are as their opportunity level of community policing. Where their viewpoints are, where they would like to go to the next level," says RCPI training specialist, Tracy Schiller.

Police officials asked members of the institute to come down and assess the department.

According to Maj. John Stewart, "One of the things we always try to do is strive to improve. The best way to do that in any organization is to get a fair and objective look from an outside agency."

The institute, based out of Eastern Kentucky University, is just one of 27 throughout the country.

It is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice and aims to increase the standards of policing.

One way the institute does this is by interacting with the community.

"We're interviewing a number of people inside the agency, parts of the city government. We're interviewing citizens on the street. We're doing some of those," says Schiller.

Major Stewart says having a third-party asking the questions will allow citizens to more freely express how they feel about the police department's work.

"In our opinion, most employees at the police department, civilian or police officers, think that we're doing a good job. However, the community may think something other than that and maybe reluctant to give us that information."

So far, Schiller likes what he sees out of the department.

"There seems to be a high-degree of openness and co-operation and that seems to be reflected in many of the comments from the citizens we speak to. The trust factor seems very high, so these are all very good things."
