Mine Safety Legislation

New legislation to improve safety for Kentucky miners is on its way to the general assembly.

The law was patterned after measures recently passed in West Virginia.

The legislation passed unanimously by a Kentucky house committee yesterday.

The bill would create fines of up to 100-thousand dollars for mine operators who fail to quickly report accidents.

The legislation also requires mine operators to store emergency oxygen supplies underground and place tracking devices on all underground coal miners.

The bill is asking all mines to be inspected at least four times a year.

Kentucky led the nation last year in the number of mine deaths with eight killed on the job.
