Many different types of forage crops exist, but none are more valuable to Kentucky farmers than alfalfa. Alfalfa is the highest yielding, highest quality forage crop grown in the Blue Grass state. It provides the foundation for Kentucky's cash hay enterprise, and it serves as a nutritional source for dairy cows and horses. Much of the state's 300,000 acres of alfalfa crop is raised in South-Central Kentucky.
On Thursday afternoon, many farmers from our area gathered at the 23rd annual Alfalfa Conference in Cave City. The conference, which featured several forage specialists as keynote speakers, focused on how farmers could get the most out of their crop by means of high quality, high yield, and stand persistence. One speaker at the conference stressed that choosing a good alfalfa variety is key in establishing a good stand of the crop.
