A BILL DESIGNED TO END A MINING PRACTICE KNOW AS MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL IS LOSING MOMENTUM IN THE KENTUCKY HOUSE...BECAUSE LAWMAKERS FROM THE COAL-HEAVY EASTERN PART OF THE STATE ARE SITTING ON THE BILL.
ENVIROMENTALISTS SAY THE PROCESS LEAVES VALLEYS FILLED WITH DIRT AND ROCK AND CLOGS STREAMS. IT ALSO LEAVES THE TOPS OF MOUNTAINS BARE. THE BILL HAS BEEN STUCK IN THE HOUSE NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIROMENT COMMITTEE FOR MORE THAN A MONTH. THE CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMITTEE JIM GOOCH SAYS MOUTAINTOP REMOVAL HAS ACTUALLY IMPROVED RURAL COMMUNITIES BY CREATING USEABLE LAND. SOME MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE BELIEVE THE BILL DESERVES A VOTE.
