Bill Would Require State to Assume Full Responsibility for Inmates

Some of Kentucky's jail problems could end soon. It appears jailers, judges, magistrates and commissioners across the state are all proposing similar ways to deal with them.

Many believe the answer is House Bill 274. If it passes, the bill will require the state to take over all county jails and assume all expenses associated with them.

Last year alone, more than 110-million dollars was transferred from the general funds of counties to make up the jail budget deficit. Jailer Jackie Strode says the amount Warren Countians have to pay varies from year to year.

Warren County Fiscal Court recently passed a resolution supporting HB 274. If the bill passes, the state will not assume full responsibility for state prisoners until July 1, 2010.
