An eastern Kentucky miner died Thursday morning in a roof collapse accident in Perry County.

State mine safety spokesman Chuck Wolfe says a layer of rocks fell on the miner in a TECO Coal mine near Hazard.

The company identified the victim as 33-year-old Tim Caudill, a roof bolter who has worked for the company since 2001.

In a press release, the company says Caudill was relocating equipment from one location to another when rock and debris fell on him.

The fatality raises the number of coal miners who have been killed in Kentucky this year to three.

It puts the number of coal miners killed on the job across the nation at 20.

According to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, Kentucky led the nation last year in the number of mine deaths with eight people killed on the job.
