California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says the 400 National Guard troops he's ordered in will relieve exhausted firefighters who have been battling more than 300 wildfires still burning in the state.

The governor paid a visit today to the command post for a blaze that's burned 13 square miles of brush in Santa Barbara County.

The fire has prompted an evacuation order for thousands of homes around Goleta.

Fire officials say the fire is 14 percent contained.

Meanwhile to the north in another area of the Los Padres National Forest, cool, damp weather early today helped 2,000 firefighters battling a huge fire around Big Sur that wrecked the coastal resort's holiday tourist trade.

That fire has blackened more than 107 square miles and destroyed 20 homes.
