A coroner has identified two people who died after an apartment fire in downtown Pikeville.

Pike County Deputy Coroner Zeb Hampton said the victims are 40-year-old Tammy Lockhart and her 17-year-old son, Justin Lockhart.

Hampton says the mother died at the scene Tuesday and her son was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

People living in the apartment building say that everything seemed normal until the building filled with smoke.

Patsy Williamson described the scene as "just lots of big black smoke and big tall flames."

She said she realized some people were trapped and asked some teenagers to help her try to get them out.

Trevez Bartley told the station that he pushed open a door and yelled, but just saw smoke piling out.

Firefighters say at least four apartments were damaged.
