Lightning is now believed to be the cause of the Sago Mine blast.
The International Coal Group announced Tuesday they believe an unusually large lightning strike, roughly three times normal strength, may have triggered a methane gas explosion that sparked the fire at Sago Mine, leading to the deaths of 12 miners.
An independent weather monitoring service measured the strike at the Sago Mine on January 2nd.
CEO, Ben Hatfield broke the news to the workers families in a private meeting yesterday.
Coal mining activities at the Sago Mine are expected to resume today.
