Shane Ragland Retrial

A divided Kentucky Supreme Court has overturned Shane Ragland's murder conviction in the sniper shooting of a University of Kentucky football player.

The court ordered a new trial, based on crucial evidence against Ragland.

It said evidence purporting to show that lead from the fatal bullet could have been from he same batch of bullets found at Ragland's residence should not have been admitted at trial.

It was the second time the high court ordered a new trial in the highly publicized case.

Ragland was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2002 in the killing of Trent DiGiuro, a walk-on offensive lineman and honor student.

DiGiuro was shot in the head in July 1994 while celebrating his 21st birthday on the front porch of a house in Lexington he shared with two teammates near campus.
