It's that time of year, when parents wave good-bye to their kids and teachers welcome them to the classroom.

Schools across south central Kentucky will be back in session on August 5, and that means a lot of preparation.

Between teachers, cafeteria workers and bus drivers, today has been a busy day, but they're not the only ones gearing up for the first day of school.

"I have my folders, my pencils, my erasers, my glue, my scissors and a notepad," said Caleb Goodman, who will start third grade at T.C. Cherry Elementary on Tuesday.

He's spending his last day of summer break playing in the water, and while he's outside, inside the classroom teachers are preparing for the return of students.

"You know, you could just go on and on and think of new ideas that you continually implement each year just to be the most effective and successful you can be, and to make sure they can have a successful year," explained Natalia Yates, who teaches fifth grade at Rockfield Elementary.

She and other staff members have been busy all day.

Just down the hall, cafeteria workers have been working to prepare for the school year as well.

"We've been doing lots of different things, ordering food for the new school year, preparing a new computer system where we will have an on-line option for parents to go on-line and do pre-payments for their students," said Gina Howard, who is the Food and Service Nutrition Director for Warren County Schools.

While teachers worked in the classroom and cafeteria workers in the kitchen, bus drivers spent their day gearing up for the first first day as well, but they say their preparations started months ago.

"We start at the end of the school year. Right at the end of the school year we have an in service for our drivers where they go around and drive and do more training, actually driving the buses," said John Odom, with Warren County Schools Transportation.

As summer comes to an end, Caleb Goodman has some last minute advice for students headed but to the classroom.

"I'm going to have fun," he shouted.

Teachers tell us they're excited about meeting their students, and encourage them to come into the classroom prepared to have a great year.
