Last week, Kentucky Mavericks owner Jason Smith told WBKO he plans on paying off all of his debt Tuesday morning.
However, some people are saying that writing bad checks is just scratching the surface of what Smith has done recently.
Two weeks into Smith's tenure as owner, employees say the 24-year-old told his entire staff of workers, players and coaches they would be given an week-long all expenses paid trip to Hawaii on his dime.
But from there the dream vacation headed south.
"As time went on, we started to see that if you had to call or add someone on the reservations, the travel agent basically said we'd have to talk to Jason Smith," says David Landreth, Director of Corporate Communications for the "former" Kentucky Mavericks.
Landreth became suspicious of Smith did some investigating.
"With a little more investigation, I personally found out that the reservations were canceled and that he had used some credit card and it had been declined," says Landreth.
Real estate agent Jack McCoy declined to speak on camera, but emailed WBKO about how Smith used his name to "allegedly" scam the American Basketball Association.
An excerpt from the email reads," Jason Smith used my name and established a bogus email address. He used that email address to inform Joe Newman, ABA CEO that I was going to wire him $16,000 for the Mavericks franchise fee. He also stated that I was an attorney in Bowling Green and had served on the city council."
McCoy says he was able to straighten out the situation with the ABA, but is frustrated over Smith's actions.
Landreth believes Smith has a lot of things to account for.
"I've seen somethings that weren't legit the last couple of weeks there, i.e., some bank statements that look like they're printed off the Internet and the numbers looked like they were tampered with, something to that effect," notes Landreth.
WBKO tried unsuccessfully to get a response from Smith.
Landreth also says the "former" Mavericks front office plans to finalize a deal with the "Sportscenter" in Owensboro later this week.
