FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky's state budget woes are affecting mental health treatment centers, some of which are for the first time having to turn people away.
Bridgehaven is one facility that for five decades has accepted anyone who needed help. This year, new clients are being turned away because of state budget cuts. The nonprofit mental health center in Louisville can't afford to give free care.
Mental health professionals say there is a growing crisis in mental health services throughout the state. Dr. Allan Tasman, chairman of psychiatry at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, says Kentucky's mental health system has been deteriorating rapidly because more clients don't have health insurance and can't pay.
