BG Soldier to Be Buried Thursday

A 101st Airborne Division soldier from Bowling Green killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq last week will be laid to rest Thursday.

Funeral services for 32-year-old Sergeant Santiago Halsel will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Graham Avenue in Bowling Green. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 11 to 1 p.m.

Halsel will be buried at Cowles Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery on Boiling Springs Road.

Halsel served as an army infantryman with the Second Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, Second Brigade Combat Team. He died on May 16 while patrolling on foot in Baghdad.

Halsel is survived by his wife, Susan, and two children. A fund has been established in her name at all U.S. Bank locations.

Halsel is the 40th member of the military with a Kentucky hometown to be killed in Iraq.
