New Louisville Archdiocese Priests are Married Men, Grandfather

Two newly ordained Roman Catholic priests are bucking traditions in the Archdiocese of Louisville.

66-year-old Wally Dant and 48-year-old Jeffrey Hopper are the archdiocese's newest priest, but they're unlike any before them.

Hopper is the first married man to be ordained in the archdiocese, and both are the first to be grandfathers.

They were ordained on Saturday.

Hopper was allowed to become a priest under a Vatican-approved provision that lets former Episcopal priests be ordained and remain married. Dant is a widower and former U-P-S executive who was attracted to the priesthood late in life.

He says his age and experience give him an advantage over younger priests who haven't seen as much.
