Witnesses say the pickup truck ended up underneath the bus. Both persons in the truck died.

The dead were identified as Gary Leaster of Newport and his father-in-law, Dale Hinzman Senior of Leavittsburg, Ohio.

According to the preliminary accident report, the truck apparently pulled in front of the bus.

The accident happened at the foot of Clinch Mountain, about 25 miles northeast of Knoxville.

The bus was carrying some 40 students in an Upward Bound program at Lincoln Memorial University. The program is hosting 150 students from Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.
