Hearing Set for Columbia Man Accused of murder

The man accused of murdering a prominent Columbia businessman pleads not guilty.

Sixty-eight-year-old Willie Paul Grant has been in the Adair County Jail since June 11.

Monday he pleaded not guilty to the murder of 46-year-old Rex Coffey.

Police say Coffey was shot with a rifle on June 10 while sitting with family and friends at a picnic shelter at Beech Grove Baptist Church.

He died the following day at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Grant was captured the following day after an extensive search.

He'll be back in court June 28 for a preliminary hearing.
